One of the biggest applause lines for Governor Palin during her VP nomination acceptance speech the other night was when she told of how she didn't feel she needed a luxury jetliner so she sold it on e-Bay at a profit. I just heard today where McCain had said that was HIS personal favorite part of her speech. There's only one slight problem - the story isn't true. Yes, she sold the plane but it didn't sell on e-Bay and it didn't bring a profit; it was a private sale to a campaign contributor.

Does anyone else find it ironic that among the things that have so endeared Sarah Palin to the public is this bogus claim as well as her "Thanks but no thanks" response to Congress regarding earmarked funds for the Bridge to Nowhere, which is also not entirely true.
I've finally found something that I agree wholeheartedly with the Republicans about! McCain and Palin really do make quite a team, they're perfectly suited for each other like two peas in a pod! Maybe before the election Palin will agree to take questions from the press and from voters but the more I learn the more I understand the McCain campaign's reluctance to let her do so.

[question posted by anniepa]responses and comments:
Yeh, I know. apparently it never sold. It ended up going to an auction and sold for a loss. still I think it was a pretty good idea to try even if it didn't work out. It wasn't really a "bogus" claim, the fact that she tried it and just the fact that she got rid of the damnn thing, even at a loss, is a good thing to me. [xfahctor]
yeh it was usefull, lots of things are, doesn't mean they aren't luxuries. Either way, I had said I already knew it didn't wind up selling on ebay and that it went to another auction. so? I still don't understand what the controversy is. [xfahctor]
Good grief, it was clearly a joke! Honestly, is this how the next two months are gonna be, finding every little thing to try and discredit her? I even knew it was a joke, who sells a jet on ebay? As much as we disagree, I KNOW you are more intelligent than this, lol!! [Tallymommy]
Sorry annie, so sorry, sorry, I was so wrong, how can I ever make it up to you, oh my goodness, I was up all night about it, sorry, sorry sorry, LOL!! (Annie, they cracked me up!) [Tallymommy]
It was a joke. It shows she's human and has a sense of humor. I thought it was funny, because I didn't take it at face value. If people are going to equate that to a lie or an "untruth" I am sure we can go back in history on all republicans, democrats, independents, and "other" who have told a little white lie as a joke [dizzblnd]
exactly.. this is why i don't use those words, nor do I really indicate in my words what my affiliation I am. I find it "safer" that way [dizzblnd]
It's going to be really hard to separate the facts from the reality about Palin over the next few weeks. The Feminist groups and the incompetent press are in "we will kill or die before we see a Conservative Republican go down in history as the first woman president" mode. They are going to say and do anything to see that it doesn't happen. While I'll comment on stories like this, I rarely base a vote on them. Yes, it will be disappointing if this turns out to be true. However, short of felonies, they usually don't sway me much. [ParaTed2k]
avranesjr: I'm just glad most people who disagree with me are able to form an intelligent argument. How does it feel to be a living stereotype of what the far right thinks for the left? [ParaTed2k]
"One of the biggest applause lines for Governor Palin during her VP nomination acceptance speech the other night was when she told of how she didn't feel she needed a luxury jetliner so she sold it on e-Bay at a profit." Annie, I don't know where you heard this lie, but it wasn't Palin that said it. Her EXACT words, as quoted in the very article you used, were: "That luxury jet was over the top," Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said to loud cheers. "I put it on eBay." She didn't claim she SOLD it on eBay, and she CERTAINLY didn't claim she sold it at a profit. It was a used plane that had made several trips. See if you can get the same price for a used car that you've been driving for a year. The point was that she sold the plane and she did put it up on eBay, even though it didn't successfully sell there. [Taskr36]
You know, something just dawned on me. Those here who insist she wasn't joking because she DID do as she said apparently think a "joke" must consist of a LIE. That it couldn't just be FUNNY when she told the truth. I SAW how she delivered it. I decided she was being funny AND telling the truth. And that IS a joke. I'm just SAYIN'.... LOL! Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
Ok, I have started to have some questions now too. There is a great deal of information out there, but I think theres a great deal of misinformation too. I understand she has dismissed people as Mayor also. One was Police Chief and the other Library Director. Although she may have been justified in the firings, it may have just been a forshadowing of things to come. I am reserving judgement until the investigation is completed concerning the firing of Monegan the Public Safety Commissioner. I understand that the investigators are expediting its inquiry in order to get the results out prior to the election. I know the trooper in question allegedly used a taser on his own child and should have been fired for the many infractions on the job too. Her office may have put pressure on the PSC. Palin and Monegan both claim that this wasn't the case, but if records eventually show that she did use her influence to wrongfully target this trooper, an ex-brother-in-law, throught the office of PSC and then terminated Monegan because of his indifference or lack of action in this pressure rather than the public reasons she stated, then I will have to reconsider my support. I was looking for a new face in politics and in Washington. I really believed that if elected, the two of them would hold our representatives accountable for the waste and mismanagement and the partisian bickering that has gone on for far too long in our Capitol. It just seemed too good to be true Annie... and maybe it is. Its nice to see you again Annie, its always fun. [DrMario]
Male librarians are in the minority, but it's definitely a growing group. At the first library I worked in I would joke that I'm the token guy. The last few libraries I've worked at have had several guys working there, but still mostly women. I'm still not sure why the occupation appeals to more women than men, eventually I'll ponder that and come to some conclusion. [Taskr36]
What I find most ironic is the fact that Conservatives jumped all over every whisper/gossip/rumor about Obama and now Palin's life is off limits. Funny how that works. Oh, well I guess that's why I sat on the fence for so long and voted the person not the party. It is all so upsetting. I just don't understand what is wrong with her past that they are so afraid of "us" finding out about? [ZephyrSun]
H-m-m-m-m I'd like to bounce something off of the ah- 'political wall' here: If I formed a new political party called the PAN party, and accepted the nomination for [resident, would anyone vote for me? Oh before I forget - the PAN party is set up where "just follow me, and everything will PAN out." LOL Cheer up folks it'll all be over with in a few more weeks. Let's party in the meantime! [ClassyCat]
What a surprise Annie, Sarah Palin lied to the American people. I found an article that ties into this story. Alaska received $150,000 to pay the travel bills of state and fisheries industry representatives on the boards that implement North Pacific fisheries agreements. I wonder how much it would have cost them if they used the states jet that she sold, and why is the state of Alaska paying for the travel of fisheries industry representatives? I guessed the she isn't as "reformed" as the GOP would like us all to believe. [thegreatdebater]
Well she didn't lie. That's been established beyond any doubt. She said she put it up and eBay and she did. She didn't claim that it sold on eBay because it didn't. "Meanwhile, the state is stuck making quarterly payments of about $62,000 on the Westwind II." http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/background/story/203814.html That's a lot of money just to OWN the plane. It doesn't even take into consideration the cost of pilots, fuel, or maintenance and repairs. There's a lot of upkeep involved with a plane especially in a state like Alaska that does not present a very hospitable environment. [Taskr36]
Oh my gosh will the lies never stop. I can't believe that she would think no one checks up on the things she says. I am afraid that Alaskan politics is a lot less under the microscope than is presidential politics. One thing this brings out is the question of integrity. If you stretch the truth on small stuff, can you trust what they say on larger things. [4magoo]
Task, I think we should be pals here. What say? :o) Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
Annie,If you listened to Sarah Palin's speech ;She said that she put the Plane up for sale on E-Bay.She didn't say that it actually sold on E-Bay. Just like the leftist media you Democrats love to spin and spew falsehoods. One thing you did get right is McCain/Palin are like two peas in a pod...Together they will stand up to lobbyist and the pork-barrel spenders and shut them down. [pismeof]
AMEN! I am soooo JAZZED about the race, now. Everything's in place. Ignore the leftists yapping at your heels. They're going to lose, & THAT'S why they're so "pis'dof." LOL! Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
She's not starting off honest, now is she? I laughed today when I heard about the plane on the news. I watched the special tonight with Campbell Brown on CNN. It was enlightening to say the least. One little lie, another little lie and another...how many lies are they planning on telling? lol No matter what you post, though, her supporters will say it's only a small thing; it doesn't matter. I don't get it. The same people would be all over Obama if it was his small lies we were talking about. Yes, I agree, Palin and McCain are perfectly suited for each other. Now we know what he meant when he called her his "soul mate"! lol [CherylsPearls]
"I haven't seen his statements yet, but the fact is, her words were accurate. If McCain said she sold it on eBay for a profit, then obviously he was wrong. I don't know if he was mistaken or lying, but obviously that's not the case and I knew that even before she made her own speech." He definitely did say it, I ended up hearing it at least three times yesterday. I don't have a link to provide at this time, but I'm not making it up...lol! The scary thing about McCain is there are SOOOOOOO many things that we don't know if he was "mistaken or lying". I'm sorry, but I'm really starting to believe his running mate has the same credibility problem with one pretty major exception - she doesn't have her age to blame it on. Annie [anniepa]
It really does not bother me. People sell anything on E-Bay and maybe she thought it would sell or maybe she was pulling our leg. Anyway I am glad a woman like that will be vice-president if McCain wins. At least there will be a woman who is for traditional family values and pro-life. I am sick and tired of all the feminists who want to kill babies in their womb. Please let there be a traditional woman in charge. If Obama gets in, in thirty years, you will have someone like me writing and telling of the baby they could not have or adopt. And if they have a good memory, they are going to remember. Oh and if the gas prices go sky high because Obama will not allow off shore drilling, remember you picked him. By the way, I am Canadian and I never voted for someone who was pro=abortion. [suspenseful]
Fiona08, bless you, bless you, BLESS YOU!! You nailed it! I'm so sick of this argument and of some people insisting on turning every single political post into an anti-choice post!! GRRRRRR...lol! Obama has said repeatedly he wants to do as you said - work together with the anti-choicers to help prevent the need or desire for abortions. I've been hearing Democrats from Jimmy Carter to Bill Clinton and beyond say abortion should be "legal, safe and RARE" with the emphasis on the "rare". Suspenseful agree with people who aren't in the least bit interested in adopting any baby that isn't newborn and that irks me to no end. I've seen so much in the job as a letter carrier, how many families that take foster children more for the money or anything else and how they get shuffled around and never adopted because they're "too old" or "not perfect enough". Unfortunately but obviously many of the babies who would have been aborted would fall into that "not perfect enough" category because they may be minorities or their parents may not have the ideal genes or they may even have had problems with substance abuse or whatever. So let's let them grow up in a cruel world of sickness, poverty and no proper education and see how they feel in thirty years! Annie [anniepa]
OH MY FRIKKIN GOD PEOPLE! LISTEN to your selves. LISTEN TO YOUR SELVES [xfahctor]
More than a Molehill, I'm with you on nearly everything you said (I DO want the fence). I have long since given up on hoping a brick of common sense will fall out of the sky & hit one of the Left on the head. It kind of happened to ME, but I doubt it's typical. Best we can hope for is to remain vigilant, & keep outnumbering them with BABIES (ooo, SCARY, huh, Leftists! LOL!). After all, we don't ABORT, at least, not wholesale, as they do. There is hope. More & more, as people see the way they conduct themselves in these viscious attacks, the mask is being pulled away to reveal the rottenness at their core. And MAN, is there EVER an UGLY face under that mask! BTW, does anyone else here know about Feminists For Life? Palin IS one. I know some here in Texas. GUTSY bunch. Just like our Veepette. ::wink:: Maggiepie (WHO, btw, heard Sarah call HERSELF a "gal" on TV today. So much for that being a "sexest" term! LOL! Eat my dust, NAGS.) [Maggiepie]
Are you sure it was a loss? I mean really it was a waste to begin with so getting any money back out of it was better than keeping it around. Sometimes you just have to make the most of the situation you are in. [banadux]
It had been owned and used for two years before it was sold. Nobody could expect to make a profit off such a thing. It was also costing the state over $60,000 a month in payments just to have it sit in a hangar. [Taskr36]
The article that was linked doesn't say that she "sold it on Ebay". It quotes her as saying "I PUT it on Ebay". It didn't sell there, but so what....it DID sell and she was able to make the point that SHE didn't have a use for it. And about the plane being used to transport prisoners, we've transported worse on our airlines - which also cart famous, well known celebrities and leaders around in 1st class....All riding on the same plane, but with different missions. Heck, if you don't remember, we've even been known to transport a few insurgents...not to mention other criminals we will never know about. A plane is a plane is a plane is a plane - no matter who it carts around Right? Maybe that part of her speech wasn't meant to be a "joke", but I'm sure she was happy about the laughs it brought anyway. Okay, I've got a confession to make -- at the risk of not getting any more friend requests........I've been known to stretch the truth, over compensate and "butter up" my words from time to time in order to impress. There, I said it. Are me and Palin the only ones out there who show signs of HUMAN NATURE? Go take it out on the guy who sold you that car you're driving....I'm sure he made things sound a little better than they actually were to get that sale. IS THAT ALL THEY'VE GOT????? Enough with the petty stuff. [soldierswife68]
"I've been known to stretch the truth, over compensate and "butter up" my words from time to time in order to impress." I think everyone has been, as far as that goes, but tell me HONESTLY, would you be so generous if it were Biden who had stretched this kind of truth and Obama who had stretched it further? Annie [anniepa]
Watching American politics is a JOKE!How could anyone take what they feed you at face value? I saw that Palin/McCain speech thing and it looked like a retarded religious get together. Of course god is mentioned enough times just to get votes from idiots who think they have a good christian heart. Politics is all lies and everyone should know that by now. I am surprised that the taxpayers foot so much money into these false advertisements. They all sound like a used car salesman/Benny Hinn. Guess who wins? The one who can rig the votes the best. Remember Bush?? If Palin/McCain win, of course they will be flying in luxury everywhere!! [night71]
XFAHCTOR, Guffaw! WHo the "edit!" Oh, MAN that's a hoot. I'm gonna steal it! I need to; MyLot is so PRISSY sometimes, you know? Maggiepie (still snorting here) [Maggiepie]
annie, you crack me up. I saw you wrote "I'll...admit I'm not the most objective person.." I'm surprised you even knew how to spell objective! She didn't say "she sold it on e-Bay at a profit." She said she "Put it on ebay" And as for the bridge to nowhere. I don't know the whole story on that but I believe she said in her speech that they are using that money for other projects. But hey. nice try. [morethanamolehill]
You know, for some crazy reason I was still talking about anniepa misquoting Sarah Palin. You know, the original point of this discussion? The point you will do anything to avoid. You seem to be trying to make it look like I'm giving my opinion here, when I am talking Facts. The fact that anniepa misquoted Sarah Palin. And you seem to be sticking up for her. [morethanamolehill]
To tell the truth I found that the Palin speech was very insulting to me as an Obama supporter maybe to some independent as well. The speech started off nice with a family background then she went on to attack Obama. infact I think the most part of speech was dedicated to attack Obama which i didn't like it. I ws begining to like McCain but now i am full Obama supporter and proud to be one. I don't mean to insult others. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/994910/john_mccain_vp_a_big_risk_or_blunder.html http://www.nitesh123.blogspot.com [nitesh512]
"...this man's opinion of me does really matter." Should read "...this man's opinion of me does NOT really matter." Spell check doesn't catch everything=). [morethanamolehill]
thumbdownSo What! thumbdown The important part of that statement was not where and how she sold it but that she sold it because did not need or want that luxury at the taxpayer's expense. Once again another Obamaniac nitpicking because they cannot address/rebut the important part of the statement. [whiteheather39]
Here we go again confused double talking Obama politics! The very first line of your discussion says "One of the biggest applause lines for Governor Palin" Now you are saying it was McCain you meant... say what you mean and mean what you say something Obama and his adoring fans seem to have a problem with. [whiteheather39]
HelloooOOOooo? It was a JOKE. Yeesh. Rush is right; libs DON'T have a sense of humor! Wound too tightly. Heh. Maggiepie [Maggiepie]
Yes, it WAS a joke, & she was even SMILING when she said it. Not that YOU'D get it, since I was right, you lot _have_ no sense of humor. Oh, & not that you'll get THIS, either, since it's the truth (another stranger to you), but Rush is right about virtually EVERYTHING he says. BTW, he NEVER made ANY "joke" about anyone with Parkinson's disease; that's a Leftist lie, too. I HEARD the remarks he made, & all he did was tell folks what Fox himself said, that in order to have his defect SHOW, he'd go off his meds when he needed to. Then he did a little body language move to show how Michael LOOKS when he DOES that, by way of demonstrating what he meant. So save your LIES -- I was THERE, I SAW what happened. I guess YOU find it funnier when morons like that woman -- a congresswoman? ...I can't recall. She was so forgettable, otherwise...said she hoped that Clarence Thomas' wife fed him lots of fatty foods so he'd die young of a heart attack. Har. And DEE hart. Oh I'm just laffin my HEAD off at that, that's soooo funny. Yuh, right. SPARE me from the so-called "sense of humor 'ELITES' (at least you ADMIT you're all a bunch of snobs!)" have. It's "classy" all right. LOOOOOW class! Yeesh. Maggiepie, who will now proceed to ignore any other blathering & lies from this Leftist twit. [Maggiepie]
I just love how, whenever a candidate makes a speech, it is picked apart word by word. They can't even be humorous or make a joke without someone making something of it. I prefer to concentrate on the bigger issues and what they're going to do about those! [newtondak]
You're right, Newton. Just like the "terrorist fist bump". Completely nit picking. [jerzgirl]
Holy *grumble* KRAP! is this STILL? going????? [xfahctor]
She did not say she "sold" it on ebay, she said she "put it on ebay". Where it sold is not the point, the point is that she was decreasing government frivol ways. People are so quick to judge and pick the speaches apart and input words where they did not belong. Let her be. Let the chips fall where they may. The voters will decide who they like best. [JanisRemaxRealtor]
Annie, this discussion looked like soooo much fun I had to pour myself a cocktail and jump right in! LOL McCain and Palin deserve each other. And when ya get right down to the nitty gritty your discussion opens up a whole plethora of questions about her. I am personally astonished that she refuses to talk take questions from the media. And that McCain was okay with this just tells me that if he is elected we will have more of the "secret government" that we've been dealing with for years. What the heck is she hiding from? I mean it would be different if that campaign had said they were taking a different approach and instead of fielding the media questions they were going to have a televised Q & A where everyday people would get to ask her questions. But we haven't seen any of that either. Just to throw a little more fuel on this fire, here's something a little out there...but my hubby and I both had the same thought. (And really this has nothing to do with politics) But...are we the only two who were waiting for "Hot for Teacher" to start playing, Palin reaches back and pulls her down, tosses her glasses, a pole drops from the ceiling...oh you get the idea...LOL [soccermom]
Whiteheather, you took the thoughts right out of my BRAIN! How DARE they call HER secretive, up against...Nobama?! Talk about a JOKE! Laffin' my tuchus off, here! In fact, ROTFLMBO&PIMP!!! Maggiepie (write me privately if you want a translation for that. MyLot won't let me print it out.) [Maggiepie]
I am a Republican, and have stated in other discussions, esp. Parateds, that I was stuck not knowing who to vote for this election. I am very interested to see what comes out about our Miss Sarah. I am not one to just follow the party line. What I don't like is the fact that some of you here were ready to stone the lady over the airplane comment at the convention, even had she said she sold it on ebay, which has been established she didn't. Put that against Hillary's, getting off the plane while being shot at, and O'bama's, In 20 years I never heard him say that, and it is like putting cotton candy to vinegar. If it turns out Sarah is gonna tell half truths, or out and out lie, I will be the first one to call her on it, as I have with McCain, but I truly am hoping I finally have a candidate in this election, I can trust and believe in. If it had been on the Democrat side I would have voted Democrat for the first time in my life, that is how disappointed I have been with the candidates that have been forced on us this time. I think we should all set back, stop with the nit picking things, and wait for the fact's to come out, then we can agree to disagree again. Blessings Marilyn [olivebranch56]
Marilyn, I agree with you. I was THRILLED that Hillary didn't get the nomination. She didn't "misspeak" - she bald-faced LIED about the tarmack sniper shooting and other stories. And, no, Ms. Palin didn't lie about posting the plane on ebay. She simply left out the remainder of the story allowing the crowds to think she DID sell it there. Even her own campaign staff believed the transaction had taken place on ebay. I don't understand why she didn't then say, but the sale didn't go through, so we sold it in a private sale. It didn't take that many more words and there would be no questions asked about ebay. Yes - it was a good thing that she was willing to try using ebay. No fault there one bit. It shows a bit of creativity with how to unload excess and/or unnecessary luxury government property. It was just the way she left it that became the problem. Not the idea of it. And, I don't vote straight party line, either. I vote for the candidate that seems to best match the position for which they are running. [jerzgirl]
You are right and I hope they will win it definately so there is no any confusion. The palin team will win. John is my hero and more when he raised palin to the vice . so i am watching american election curiously. [kisanchhantyal]
God help us if they do. We'll need His help more than ever! [jerzgirl]
I think the point is she sold the plane to cut costs. Hmm, I wonder if the Chicago Tribune is "in the tank " for Obama like the rest of the print media. No doubt ! After all their now famous community organizer has been greatly criticized, and rightly so by Governor Palin. I'm sure in regards to the bridge she was for it, until the it became obvious that this project was a bad allocation of tax payers dollars. She set the example that democrats and republicans don't have the since to follow. [RFMaster08]
The fault isn't in the selling of the plane. The article mentions how it's cheaper to use Air Marshals than a private jet. The fault is implying that the plane sold on ebay when it didn't. She never finished the story, but instead allowed the crowds to believe it sold on ebay. [jerzgirl]
The fact that she posted it on ebay is a good thing. The fact that she didn't finish the story with how it ended, but instead allowed people to assume the ending makes it a bogus claim. She sold it at a lost to a campaign contributor, and again, that's fine - but she never said the ebay transaction didn't go through, so she went another route. She allowed the crowd to assume she had sold it on ebay. So, while posting on ebay is a good thing, allowing people to assume the ending ISN'T! It is cheaper to transport using Air Marshals than it was to operate a private jet. Getting rid of it was a good move. Implying how she got rid of it without finishing the story in order to gain favor was NOT a good move. I like a lot of things about her as a person, but she is too much a politician to every be fully revealing in anything. And, the fact that so many Hillary-ites are rushing to support her for the simple reason that she has no penis is as sexist as anything they've accused the media of. They don't deserve to have a say in the election if they're only voting for gender and not quality. [jerzgirl]
I would think that she would want to make appearances. The way to do things is not by being quiet, and definitely not with lies that you know will come out. I am not sure how I want to vote. Too bad there is not a none of the above box. [Thoroughrob]
Because I knew this was not the truth about what Governor Sarah Palin actually said,if people want to know what the Governor said it is 1/4 of the way thought her RNC speech, "Quote",she said that luxury jet was over the top.I put it on eBay.(Source Sarah Palin RNC Speech)Sept 2008 She never said it was sold on eBay but it was listed on ebaywhich is 100% truth. Anchorage Daily News Dec 2006 reports former governor Murkowski attempted to get 2,692 million dollars from a request he made to home land securtiy,it was denied. Governor Murkowski after being denied by homeland security took the money from the the Alaska tax payers to purchase the west wind 2 luxury jet. One week after taking office winning by a landslide,Governor Sarah Palin announced to the people of Alaska the luxury jet was being placed on eBay,the people thanked their new governor Sarah Palin (Source archives Anchorage Daily Newspaper Dec 26,2006) The luxury Jet was placed on eBay and had one bid in the asking price range that Alaska was asking, but due to multiple red tape problems the state of Alaska ended up not able to except the bid. Soon after matters was cleared at eBay a buyer out of Valdez,AK made a offer that the state of Alaska excepted making a profit for the state on the sell.(Source Anchorage Daily News archives early 2007) In the many attempts of degrade Governor Saran Palin it has actually crowd her the shining star that she is and that is good news. She has been the governor of Alaska two years and she maintains a 80% approval rate and is the highest rated governor of all the governors of the United States, and that is a wrap. www.gov.state.ak.us www.ontheissues.org A very good way to learn much more about the excellent work Governor Sarah Palin has done for the people of Alaska, go to Sarah Palin's Alaska governor's page to understand clearly the issues in Alaska and Sarah Palin's brilliant achievements as governor of Alaska 2006-2008. The link www.on the issues.org is honest reporting where a person can follow the issues correctly and as they actually happen, true American voters should not settle for no less then excellent journalism and reporting. [kennyrose]
Well, I still can't believe there are many Republicans out there that believe Palin is God, and everything else being printed out there and said about her is untrue. But then some of the things I heard her say even at the Convention made me wonder about her, as I have heard a lot of conflicting information about her all of the time. I honestly cannot wait until the Vice Presidential debates, and hate to think about what would happen if McCain was to really win the Election. Something there just does not fit. [KrauseHome]
