That's what I just heard on the radio. Now whether it's true or not is another story, but all the trucker's on the CB radio are reporting gas prices in excess of $5.00 right now at stations in the southern part of Illinois. If this is true, it's about time for our government to step in and do something about it.
What say you?

Ours was over 4.00 a couple of months ago, but it's been going down since. As of yesterday it was about 3.36 at some places. [sabbatha]
i also started a discuccion similar to this and i agree it is time for our government to do something about it!!i also heard yesterday it was going to hit $5 a gallon hollingsworth which is a gas company called my husbands work telling them.I HOPE IT DON'T HAPPEN!!THAT IS WAY TOO MUCH MONEY TO BE FORKIN OUT!! [newlands6801]
This information was passed on to me from my favorite gas station as well. It is a small, family owned station, and prices went up last night over 37 cents a gallon in less than an hour. When I asked them about it, they told me to fill up then, because today gas prices would be $5.00 a gallon. I filled up! The funniest part of this entire thing is the last week or so, producers of crude have been crying the blues about a surplus in crude and have wanted to slow production. It is time for the government to get to regulating gas prices with strict, harsh rules. [rantingqueen]
The reason prices are rising right now have nothing to do with crude oil supplies. We have plenty of crude oil. The problem lies in the refineries which turn the oil in gas. Many refineries were shut down on the coast of Texas because of the storm. We have the oil but we can't make the gas. [liscampll]
I agree the government or someone need to step in and do something about this. I heard this too. I got a phone call last night asking have I heard about it. And was advised to go fill my tank up. I said why? I have to deal with the $5.00 a gallon sooner or later. I did get some gas though. I really hope it doesn't get that high I work 20 miles from home. [Chevee]
Everything is going to go up because of Ike swirling in the gulf. I heard the same thing also this morning. I live in Florida and it went up when Hannah came through also. It always goes up. Funny how we've been having hurricanes now since the dawn of time and only now has gas gone up when one even thinks about forming or when one might swirl through the Gulf of Mexico shutting down production. That's a government conspriacy! [ColdSunshine]
Because of the PREDICTIONS that the refineries are going to be down for several weeks - maybe months IF they are hit, the prices are going up. [newtondak]
I just saw on CNN a few hours ago it is over 5.00 in SC. [Sarah1108]
What would you like our government to do? Drill for oil domestically so we are not dependant on foriegn oil or have them socialize it? Gas has been dropping where I'm at, its still not as low as some places but its at $3.85, that's down from $4.09 just a month ago. [gitfiddleplayer]
Yes, and here it is down to $3.79 from $4.21. I'm only saying what I'm hearing from truckers out on the road in this area. Drill here is what I would prefer; I used to work drilling rigs. [myklj999]
I heard while I was out to lunch that wholesale gas prices are at $5.00 per gallon now so it's only a matter of time before the increase is passed on to the consumer. The reason is the anticipated lack of refining capability for an undetermined amount of time due to Hurricane Ike. Right now gas in south central Florida is still at $3.79, where it's been for a few weeks, but I filled my tank while I was out and suggested that my husband fill his as well. Better to be safe than...pay more. happy [spalladino]
Everytime we get a hurricane it seems as though the gas stations are goudging, but I am so lucky that my broom runs on the blood on virgins...... [heatherfeather80]
Michael, two for one, isle three, Target on 8th street. Kitty, I'm sorry, but your broom is much more comfy than mine. Mine always seems to ride up as I reach the jet stream... BE CAREFULE IN THAT FRIKKEN HURRICANE KITTY! [heatherfeather80]
How could this be true when the price of oil in the world market is going down. Just today, here in our country, we have a price rollback on oil products. I know OPEC is planning to reduce its production nd this might affect again the price but not today! [everlasting]
I just put some gas in my car about 20 minutes ago and paid 3.65 a gallon. That's down a few cents from eallier this week. It is going to depend where you gas and oil comes from. I live in New England and we gon't get our fuel from the gulf so we wont see as big a jump here. I think the 5.00 gas people are already seeing are rogue stations gouging and taking advantage of the situation in the gulf. [xfahctor]
Likely. There's been some reliable reports that actually some gas stations are purposefully (and illegally) raising their gas prices to get more money. [xParanoiax]
Hi myklj99, If the Gas prices are going over $5.00 a gallon and if your goverment step about it well I'm sure your goverment will put it up to $10 dollars a gallon, I wouldn't trust the goverment as far as I can throw them so watch this space. Tamara [tamarafireheart]
Are you sure of your facts.Gas prices are going downnin VA 3.69 isour price [shoffman2000]
The Government has figured by now everyone has traded in their old, wood-paneled "Country Squire" station wagons for the little, tiny, battery operated Hondas. There should not need to panic about gas prices anymore, because we are all suppose to be driving...HYBRIDS. [mrghill]
I ride a motorbike and I wonder why more people don't do this. It's cheaper on petrol, you don't get stuck in traffic, it's easier to park, fun to ride them and they emit less carbon so are better for the environment. [aslanlight]
Well yes very hard to ride in snow! lol I'm high up on the moors and wouldn't venture out if the roads were icy or covered in snow but if it's belting down with rain or is very cold I'll go out because my biker jacket is extremely warm and I wear jeans and waterproofs over them. I'm going to invest in a pair of leather trousers and I have some excellent bike boots. The only thing that gets cold and numb is my hands and fingers. I have some good leather gloves but they don't keep the cold out. I might get some of those bike mitts that you attach to the handlebars, I'm sure the gloves and those should help. My ex used to stop the bike when his hands got too cold and warm them up on the exhaust pipe. [aslanlight]
I hope it's not going to get too drastic. So far so good here in northern Illinois, as of 5:00 pm anyway. Just to be on the safe side I texted hubby at work and he got a few more gallons in the tank on his way home. We have band practice tomorrow over in Iowa. It's always cheaper over there than in Illinois so we'll top off the tank on the way. [craftcatcher]
Oops, the cat walked over my mouse and hit the button before I was done! Anyway, if the gas companies do start raising prices drastically then the government is going to have to step in. It's gotten so expensive to run a car already that people are losing their jobs because they can't get back and forth to work. The economy has already taken some severe blows this year, we sure don't need another one. [craftcatcher]
I just told Bc Mike that with this hurricane I'll be swimming up to Canada..you want to have a visitor too?..lol..no gas since the winds will take me..wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee [Rosekitty]
My daughter called me this afternoon and told me that someone told her that gas is at $5 down at Carbondale. She also told me that it went up to $3.99 here....up from $3.71....and just before that it was $3.58. So gas has jumped up by 41 in the last 4 or 5 days. Maybe less. [bluerubymoon53]
ooooooops....I forgot to mention wheredoh....Effingham. And the assistant manager lives there. [bluerubymoon53]
well we were at like 3.50 then it jumped like 20 plus cents out of no where then now it jumped again to 4.09 and tomorrow its gonna be over 5 bucks.. all the gas stations are empty sad [moonlitmagikchild]
OPEC said it was decreasing production to keep oil at over 100 dollars a barrel. Perhaps if we increase our own production and work on converting our cars to natural gas we can offset OPEC's tyranny. I said it two years ago and I'll say it again: I'd kill every bear in Alaska if it meant we could tell OPEC to kiss our a$$es.... [sndcain36]
Oh okay....now I'm up to speed. You were referring to the hurricane. I have been moving so no tv or internet for me until yesterday....and then I didn't get caught up on the news til this morning.... My SIL is in the middle of the mess, but I heard from her this morning and she said the worst is over for her part of town. [sndcain36]
Aren't gas prices usually higher in places like Illnois, Californa ,etc? I know when I lived in Iowa gas prices there were up to 20 cents more a gallon compared to where my family was down south. [sedel1027]
Yea its getting pretty ridiculous here lately today the local gas stations were lined up with cars to get as much gas as possible before the prices went up. Its like the gas companies are using the hurricane as an excuse to jack the prices up. Just because some of the oil rigs had to be evacuated. Theres plenty of reserve until they can get back to the rigs. Something needs to happen quicker with alternative energy sources but I think the oil companies are spending money to hide these ideas so they can bank of petroleum for as long as possible. [hrjustin]
...I heard gas was going down.. but then again, maybe it's the speculation over Ike even if you have a breathalyzer in your car.. Someone should be overseeing the oil companies and the speculators! [flowerchilde]
I posted the same discussion I think on Friday, Maybe Saturday morning. Gas is $5.20 here in TN now. It is because of Ike. This is crazy. I'm not sure how we can continue to keep driving, but we can't stay at home. What gives? [walkthetalk]
I'll bet, I guess that was hard for you also. We always make it some how. Wish her luck from all of us. [walkthetalk]
WHAT??! thats freakin CRAZY!!! I don't knwo what the current price is here (oh but here's my husband..let me ask)...He's saying its under $4.00 around here BUT he also said that the current jump is from the hurricanes.... [Ravenladyj]
If mother nature would stop messing with us and our oil, then we would be ok. To many destructive storms against us, and the oil companies making sure they stick it to us, they just want to cover their ars**es. Pe's me off just when gas prices were at a level and going down, now this. Geeesshh... [irishmist]
