Oh, I dunno.
Whatever happened to the CNN producer who did that special about the US use of nerve gas in North Vietnam. The whole "Operation Northwinds" or somesuch?
Lotsa people interviewed, lots of "evidence." Turns out the whole thing was cut out of whole cloth.
But she seemed to have gotten away with it.
What makes you think that Mapes is gonna have to pay at all? Slap on the wrist, "fired," undoubtedly a nice severance package.
Who knows, maybe Kerry'll hire her on as the next campaign communications director. "Sacrificed on the altar of right-wing bloggers!"
Posted by: Dean on September 20, 2004 02:12 PMActually Dean, I think that CNN producer got fired, if not two of them. I'm blanking on the name. And of course, Peter Arnett left CNN in the same tailwind.

Nice phrasing, leads you to believe it will be an "unbiased independent review". But I gotta admit, the phrase "independent review" just kind of slides off the tongue.
Gave me a momentary warm and fuzzy feeling...

Posted by: sofla on September 20, 2004 04:24 PMI have no idea, nor do I care. His comments are funny, regardless of who he is.
Or is "sofla" saying that if this is "THE John Ellis" that Mary Mapes shouldn't get a lawyer? Ad hominem much?
Posted by: Dave on September 20, 2004 07:40 PMNo, just curiousity, that if it were THE John Ellis, the cousin of Jeb and George W., what he, as a non-lawyer news broadcaster, would know about lawyers, exactly.
And obviously, I suppose, he's not talking about a criminal matter, but an employment and/or defamation law situation, should she be scapegoated.

So, if a friend of mine tells me that he was just in a car accident, since I'm not a doctor, does that preclude me from advising him to "See a doctor, immediately"?
What if I'd been in a car accident before, myself? Or if I knew of people who'd been in car accidents and had had complications arise later?
As for recommending that she have her own lawyer, rather than relying on CBS to look out for her best interests, is that really so difficult to understand?
Honestly, when I saw that biz about an internal investigation, I thought the same thing. And since she will likely take the fall, if Rather doesn't (and maybe even if he does), that makes sense, don't you think?
