Matthew Yglesias on Health Care

Matthew has a rather deceptive post on health care and I've posted my thoughts on his mindless use of statistics over at Outside the Beltway.

Can't you post something interesting so I can duke it out with you and your boyz? All your posts require an investment in the econoboyz blogosphere that is much higher than I want to pay.

Sorry for threadjacking but you wrote:

Deb,

Please try to refrain from dragging discussions in closed threads over to new comment sections.

Deb: Your mother wears army boots, neener neener.

I just thought I'd take a minute to elevate the level of discourse a bit.

Steve, I'm sorry. You are nowhere near Timmy in overestimating your intelligence. This guy has nothing substantive to say ever. And the bank teller thinks people find his repetitive, inane tinkling on my ankle funny. I guess maybe it's the only time he gets to interact with a woman?

Posted by: deb on April 15, 2005 01:09 PM

Deb,

Are you trying to tell us that you're bummed Steve didn't consult for Enron?

Posted by: Jon on April 15, 2005 01:22 PM

Hey Deb, I get to interact a lot with women; like everytime I check out at the supermarket there they are, ringing up my purchase.

Grocery shopping is on-topic for an economic post, isn't it?

Posted by: Ron on April 15, 2005 02:51 PM

dear jonron and moron,

sorry, no clue what you're talking about.

and no one has answered the simple question yet:

what is steve verdon's day job? Has anyone ever paid this guy a PENNY for his thoughts on economics?

You market-worshippers DO agree that the question of whether someone has ever been paid for blathering on a topic is a cue ("signal") to whether the person's blathering is worth a dime, don't you?

Posted by: deb on April 15, 2005 05:03 PM

Not as reliable a clue as that of repeated references to one's intellectual opponents' sex lives. Such as your repeated references, deb.

The current "market" for your credibility is zero.

Deb says
sorry, no clue what you're talking about
You guys gotta admit, truer words have never been spoken. I'm wondering, though, if Deb realizes just how how extensively true that statement is.

Posted by: Ron on April 16, 2005 07:48 AM

I guess steve is embarrassed to come out about what he does for a day job. why am i not surprised?

Posted by: deb on April 16, 2005 03:07 PM

Are you really so daft as you can't find his OTB profile by clicking around from the link in this very post?

Posted by: Timothy on April 16, 2005 09:37 PM

No Timmy - it's not cost-effective to spend any more time trying to figure out what stevie does - google him and you will see that he as no web presence except for the lightweight boyz in the economics blogosphere.

Do you REALLY have a degree in economics - you should have been able to figure this one out, Timmy!

Posted by: deb on April 17, 2005 11:46 AM

Well Deb if you must know my day job is statistical analysis and programing. I also do economics related stuff, but mostly it is the stats stuff.

Posted by: Steve on April 17, 2005 12:38 PM

Steve: Speaking of that Outside The Beltway profile, you might want to get it cleaned up a bit, it looks like half of once sentence is missing.

Posted by: Timothy on April 17, 2005 01:24 PM

Thanks Steve. As I suspected, no one has ever paid you a penny for your expertise in economics.

Posted by: deb on April 17, 2005 01:57 PM

I wonder if deb had the same sneering attitude when a particular professor of linguistics took it upon himself to comment upon foreign policy?

Posted by: Dean on April 17, 2005 06:12 PM

Deb's nearly always got the same sneering attitude. She only drops it when she's whining about how come everyone else is being so adversarial.

Posted by: Slartibartfast on April 17, 2005 08:14 PM

No deb you thought wrong. The economics related stuff is economics. Not broad sweeping stuff like general equilibrium, but still related to a particular field of economics.

Posted by: Steve on April 17, 2005 08:43 PM

Steve,

As a non-economist (but one who has taken a few classes, and has a bit of interaction with economists), let me say:

1. Your blog is useful in explaining economic concepts and, more to the point, to presenting the economic POV on various public policy issues.

2. Your credibility is far higher than this deb person's on any topic at any given moment. Not to mention being far more civil.

3. I'd venture that it's this inane, and explicit, looking for a fight that leaves me wondering about the cost-benefit of having her commenting here in the first place.

Posted by: Dean on April 17, 2005 08:58 PM

I think his Sainthood RE: Deb The Nutty Psychology Prof is probably what keeps Steve coming out relatively good on these Evil Exams.

Posted by: Timothy on April 17, 2005 09:27 PM

I've had some time to think about it, and Deb, if it makes you feel better to think that I don't get paid for my knowledge of economics then fine. I don't get paid for my knowledge of economics. Do you feel better now?

Interesting - esp in the light of my Krugman/Enron comment which I find it hard to believe you cannot grok.

And while their opinion might be worth a dime - or a nickel depending on the NYT's current payscale for columnists - it doesn't even remotely mean they are "correct" - factually, technically or theoretically.

Also - consider the "who" of who is paying the bling - is it a firm that it is involved in creating wealth - or is it a University like Princeton?

That should answer your question rather handily.

Oh - and I'm feeling left out. Why haven't you asked about my qualifications to ask impertinent questions about Krugman and his abuse of stats?

Please do be checking you pie at the door.

Posted by: Jon on April 18, 2005 08:44 AM

Ooh Ooh, I'm getting paid for my knowledge of economics at this very moment!

Posted by: Timothy on April 18, 2005 02:24 PM

Timmy da bank teller: How would you like that? Twenties okay? Or would you prefer tens?
