Prediction Time

I predict that Gov. Schwarzenegger will grant clemency to Stanly Tookie William the triple murderer. Lets face it, when we get right down to it, Schwarzenegger is a girlie man. What a freaking wuss.

Here's a question though (I'm being serious here). Is he worse than Davis?

Somebody said that he'd rather trust government to the first 500 people in the Boston phone book. (Or something like that. I assume he was talking about choosing random individuals; if not, he should have been) Is an actor worse than a politician? And remember Jesse Ventura.

I sometimes ponder whether government representatives should be choosen like members of a jury, at random from the public.

Steve, I'm afraid that you are right.

If Arnie commutes this death sentence to life in prison, that's a good thing, IMO. The power of the state needs to be limited, and trusting the state to justly only kill killers while not killing innocents is naive or worse.

But out of curiousity, why do you think Arnie is going to cave to the glitterati pressure? Are there tea leaves that indicate this, or is it just an analysis of Arnie as a weak reed?

Two things lead me to this conclusion:

1. Arnie is weak right now. His ballot measures all failed, and his popularity is in the tank. Some point out that the state legislators and senators also have low approval ratings, but for them that is typical so I don't see that as a big offset.

2. I know Arnie denied clemency in two previous cases, but it looks like Tookie has the benefit of a lot of Hollywood nitwits on his side. Arnie might seek to "reposition" himself by commuting William's sentence to life in prison.

Add to that the recent appointment of a former Davis crony and things look pretty bleak on this issue.
